<\/p>\n\nDenia (or D\u00e9nia, in Valencian) is one of the most renowned tourist destinations in the province of Alicante. The capital of the Marina Alta region multiplies its population in summer, thanks to its good weather, its beaches and its natural and maritime attraction.<\/p>\n\n
This is a purely Mediterranean destination. Denia is situated very close to the cape of La Nao, halfway between the cities of Valencia and Alicante, and with the island of Ibiza just opposite.<\/p>\n\n
The town centre of Denia (40,000 inhabitants) is small, so it is very easy to get around in just a few hours. In the following article we detail the essential things to see in and around Denia.<\/p>\n\n
Denia Castle is, without a doubt, the main heritage element of the municipality. It is located on the highest point of the city. For a small entrance fee, you can enjoy this fortress of Islamic origin, built between the 11th and 12th centuries. It played a fundamental role as a defence against pirate attacks, and centuries later new elements were added depending on the historical period, until it lost its function at the end of the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n

Denia Castle<\/p>\n\n
Today, Denia Castle conserves several points of interest, such as towers and gates, which allow the visitor to better understand how it functioned. Inside, it also houses an archaeological museum, with interesting pieces of Iberian, Roman and Muslim origin. It is also an excellent viewpoint over the city and the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n
The centre of Denia is a compendium of narrow streets surrounding the castle hill. In the Plaza de la Constituci\u00f3n, where the town hall and the church of Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de la Asunci\u00f3n are located, begins the Calle de Loreto, the main street of the historic centre and the gastronomic axis of the town. Next to it, the streets Mayor, Sant Josep and Cavallers are also worth a stroll.<\/p>\n\n

In addition to the old town, Denia’s seafront area is also worth discovering. The lively Marqu\u00e9s de Campo street links the old town with the Cervantes Esplanade, known for its characteristic palm trees. From here, you can extend your walk to the Baix la Mar neighbourhood, bordered by the castle and the sea, which has seafaring origins and picturesque corners such as the Pla\u00e7a de Sant Antoni and Pla\u00e7a de la Creu.<\/p>\n\n
Denia has about 20 kilometres of coastline with several beaches stretching along this coastline, divided into two sectors: Les Marines (to the west of the centre) and Les Rotes (to the east). The main beach in the municipality is Les Marines beach, a 3 kilometre long stretch of sand that starts in the Baix la Mar neighbourhood and ends at Les Bovetes beach.<\/p>\n\n

The beach of Les Marines is ideal for families thanks to its fine sand, its width and the numerous services it has, such as sunbeds, lifeguards, baths, canoes and other water games.<\/p>\n\n
In total, the municipality of Denia has some 20 kilometres of coastline, along which there are a good number of beaches and coves. One of the longest is Les Marines, mentioned in the previous point, but the following are no less attractive and popular:<\/p>\n\n
Les Deveses: with more than 3 kilometres of sandy beach, it is the longest in the municipality and also the most northerly. Many people come here to sunbathe and swim in its waters, but also to surf and kitesurf.<\/p>\n\n
Les Bovetes: it is about 1,800 metres long, covered with pleasant sand. It is very close to several housing developments, shops, beach bars, restaurants… It is also a beach accessible for people with reduced mobility and has toilets and showers.<\/p>\n\n
Marineta Cassiana: to the south of the historic centre of Denia, this is a narrow stretch of sand, flanked by a pedestrian promenade and bathed by a very shallow sea with little swell, making it ideal for families.<\/p>\n\n
Punta del Raset: also very close to the town centre of Denia and the port, many people know it by the name of Cagarritar. It is about 600 metres of sandy beach, with a width of 75 metres, partly flanked by dunes.<\/p>\n\n
Punta dels Molins: next to Les Bovetes beach, it has the same services, although Els Molins tends to have fewer bathers in summer. It is partly protected by a line of dunes on which abundant coastal vegetation has grown.<\/p>\n\n
Denia was designated in 2015, by Unesco, Creative City of Gastronomy, a nomination that gives even more value to the local cuisine. Next to the numerous bars in Calle Loreto, you can visit the municipal market of Denia (Calle Magallanes), where you can find the best products from the land and the sea. Here you will find the best fish and seafood direct from the local fish market.<\/p>\n\n

Denia Market<\/p>\n\n
It is a delight to walk through the corridors of this museum looking at the toys on display here, which reflect the importance of this industry in the town from the beginning of the 20th century onwards. The museum occupies what used to be the local train station on the Denia-Carcaixent line, a space shared with the Art Centre, a regular venue for various temporary exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n
As for the museum as such, it houses a large number of children’s toys, both in tin (the predominant material in the early toys of local industry) and in wood (especially from the 1920s onwards). These include donkeys, prams and lorries, sailing boats, horse-drawn carriages, scooters, bicycles, pedal cars and little kitchens, among many other things.<\/p>\n\n
It is a port with a long history, as in the 1st century AD there was already a berth here used by the Romans as a base for sea routes to the Balearic Islands. In addition to this historical facet, the port of Denia is also a modern facility for numerous pleasure boats that moor in the sports area, where there are some 500 moorings. Next to it are the fishing port and the maritime station, from where the Balearia ferries depart, connecting Denia with Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca.<\/p>\n\n
An important part of the port of Denia is also the fish market, or P\u00f2sit, where every afternoon, with the arrival of the fishermen after their work at sea (from Monday to Friday at around 5 p.m.), the auction of the products they have caught takes place.<\/p>\n\n
In addition to all this, there is a wide range of bars, restaurants, leisure facilities and nautical activity companies that are concentrated in the marina of El Portet. A very lively place, especially in the evening during the holiday season.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\nThis neighbourhood is located next to the port and is very striking, especially because of the small, colourfully painted houses that can be seen in places such as the Plaza de Mariana Pineda or the Plaza de la Cruz. In this way, the fishermen could immediately recognise their homes from their own boats. It is also very picturesque to walk along Calle Pont until you reach the Plaza de San Antonio, one of the main meeting points in this fishermen’s quarter of Denia, thanks to its bars and terraces. The same is true of Calle Buenavista.<\/p>\n\n
The former FEVE line that linked Denia with Carcaixent is today one of Spain’s greenways. The service was dismantled in 1974 and, after several years of abandonment, the route was recovered in 2013 for the enjoyment of the citizens. The route, six kilometres long, links Denia and El Vergel, and is flat and very easy to walk. It is also adapted for people with reduced mobility. The landscape is mainly agricultural, with orange groves, almond trees and other species of the region.<\/p>\n\n

Denia Greenway<\/p>\n\n
One of the jewels of Denia is the Montg\u00f3 Natural Park, which surrounds the municipality from the south from the coast to the interior. This massif includes the municipalities of Denia and J\u00e1vea, between which it forms a real boundary wall, reaching an altitude of 753 metres. It is a magnificent place to breathe in nature and do some hiking while enjoying privileged views over the region and the sea.
